Task

Preliminary exercise: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.

All video and audio materiel must be original, produced by the candidate (s), with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free source. Both preliminary and main task may be done individually or as a group. maximum four members to a group.

Storyboard
To create a storyboard I used the script writing to turn it into a visual then sketch the story into the storyboard.

Preliminary Task Evaluation

I was on my own for Preliminary task, which I had to think outside the box with some of my interests. I am interested in action with comic book characters (e.g superman etc.), which made me think of making my own comic character but it doesn't involve having power or being a hero, however it has skills. The fist thing I though of is assassins, as I love the costume and props they wear and it links very well with my plan. After thinking of my characters I knew what my storyline will be like as hearing/ thinking of the word 'assassin' creates the feeling of someone targeting a high powered person that then recruits an assassin to do the job to wipe him/her away for a high price.

My role in the editing process was to transport the filming from the camera into the mac (by using SD card) and then import the videos so that I can accesses on the final cut pro, then cropping the footage to cut out unwanted things such as people, typing the words on the slides for the credits, adding sound track at the background for effects of movements etc. and adding transitions to make the change between shots smooth.

I met the brief by having match on action (door handle pushed/feet walking through door), 180 degree rule (staying to one half of the axis of action), I edited these different things by cutting the action and placing a corresponding piece of footage to continue the sequence for match on action, for 180 degree rule I found the axis of action and just stayed on this and did not cross it.

I feel that the actors worked well, and as a group we worked well from the planning all the way through the filming process and I did a good job on the editing process by my own (for my first time). To improve this I feel that I could have taken more shots for each scene especially match on action, and also chose a different setting where there is a batter décor (very posh environment/ room) to match the storyline as I did not have the perfect location due to the finance problem (hard to afford) a 1st class location, also it was hard to find a decent place around my area.

Composition In Media Studies

Key terms, definitions and examples

Composition
Arranging or positioning objects in the image.

Depth

The distance between the object and the camera lens or creating image by adding objects in the foreground, middle ground and background. A useful composition technique is overlapping.

Focus

Focusing into a main object by making it sharp or soft.

Framing

The world is full of objectives which make perfect natural frame, such as trees, archways and holes. The border between the spaces we are allowed to see and that which is out of our sight. By placing these around the edge of the composition you help to isolate the main subject from the outside world. In the process of doing this it is batter to be careful that it does not only focus on what is framing the  subject.
