Composition In Media Studies

Key terms, definitions and examples

Composition
Arranging or positioning objects in the image.

Depth

The distance between the object and the camera lens or creating image by adding objects in the foreground, middle ground and background. A useful composition technique is overlapping.

Focus

Focusing into a main object by making it sharp or soft.

Framing

The world is full of objectives which make perfect natural frame, such as trees, archways and holes. The border between the spaces we are allowed to see and that which is out of our sight. By placing these around the edge of the composition you help to isolate the main subject from the outside world. In the process of doing this it is batter to be careful that it does not only focus on what is framing the  subject.
